LGBT Affirmative Therapy

What is LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy?

Affirmative therapy is an approach to therapy that embraces a positive view of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) identities and relationships and addresses the negative influences that homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism have on the lives of LGBTQ+ clients.

All sexual orientations and gender identities are a natural part of the human experience. The following are some of the struggles and challenges encountered by LGBTQ+ individuals:

  • Exploring one's sexual orientation, gender expression, and/or gender identity
  • Exploring one's gender training and gender socialization
  • Exploring the coming out process and the experience of outing
  • Challenges associated with biphobia, homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism
  • Integration of sexual orientation and/or gender identity with other identities such as race & ethnicity, religious/spiritual affiliations, political ideologies, and family of origin.
  • Academic Issues
  • Career & Work Issues
  • Health (Emotional and Psychological, Physical)
  • Relationship Issues (Family, Friendships, Intimate Romantic/Sexual)
